Spider control in Grenada

Most spiders in Grenada are harmless, and left alone they eat a lot of other pests. People usually call us about how it looks rather than about danger: webs across a veranda, egg sacs in the eaves, and large spiders indoors after rain.

What brings them in

  • Spiders follow their food. A property with a lot of flying insects will have a lot of webs.
  • Outside lighting is the biggest single cause. It gathers insects, and the web builders set up where the insects are.
  • Quiet corners, eaves, verandas, storerooms and roof spaces give web builders the anchor points they need.
  • Heavy rain pushes ground-dwelling and wandering species towards buildings, which is when the large ones appear indoors.
Health & risk

Almost all spiders in Grenada pose no real risk to people. Bites are uncommon and usually minor. Some of the large species can give a painful bite if they are handled or trapped against skin, so the sensible thing is not to handle them. If a bite produces a spreading or unusual reaction, see a doctor rather than trying to identify the spider yourself.

How to tell you have a problem

  • Webs across corners, ceilings, verandas and under the eaves.
  • Round or teardrop egg sacs in quiet spots that do not get disturbed.
  • Heavy webbing around outside lights, which points at the insects rather than the spiders.
  • Large spiders wandering indoors after heavy rain.
  • Dusty cobwebbing in storerooms, roof spaces and behind furniture.
  • Webs rebuilt a day or two after you clear them, which means the food supply has not changed.

Common species here

Golden silk orb-weaver
Trichonephila clavipes

Large and striking, and the one that builds the big golden webs across garden gaps and verandas. Not aggressive and not a medical concern.

Most visible in the wet season
Huntsman spiders
Family Sparassidae

Large, flat and fast, and the ones that cause the most alarm indoors. They hunt rather than build webs, so they wander.

All year
Cellar and cobweb spiders
Pholcidae and Theridiidae

Small and long-legged. Responsible for most of the untidy cobwebbing in corners, roof spaces and storerooms.

All year

How we treat it

1Inspect

We identify what is there and work out what they are feeding on and where they are anchoring. Where the webs are tells you where the insects are.

2Treat

We take down the webs and egg sacs by hand, then treat the eaves, verandas, window reveals and shelter points, and treat the insects they are feeding on.

3Prevent

We go through the outside lighting, screening and clearance with you, and for properties where appearance matters, such as villas and guest accommodation, we set up web removal on a schedule.

What you can do yourself

None of this replaces a treatment, but it makes the treatment work better and last longer.

  • Change outside lights to warm or amber LEDs, or move them away from doors and windows. Fewer insects means fewer webs.
  • Clear webs and egg sacs regularly with a brush or a vacuum. Doing it often matters more than doing it hard.
  • Reduce clutter and storage in garages, storerooms and roof spaces.
  • Seal gaps around windows, doors and vents.
  • Cut back planting touching the walls and roof.
  • Shake out shoes, gloves and stored clothing before you use them, especially in outbuildings.
